It’s no secret that we think the best place to live, work & play are the Georgia Mountains.  We are quite fond of our mountains and we love to share with others what we think they will love!  One of our favorites that kicks-off the same time of year, just before school starts in late July…is none other than the Georgia Mountain Fair, held in Hiawassee at the Fairgrounds.   Our community refers to it as “the fair”.  This “fair” is so much more than just a “fair”.  With this being the 67th year they’ve been doing it, they really have gained a vast knowledge of how to make it fun, entertaining & educational all rolled up into one event. Our Georgia Mountain Fair
is held July 21-29, 2017 at the Historic Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds.  Thousands of visitors from across the region travel to experience the excitement and nostalgia that they offer. With first class musical performances, arts & crafts, fun carnival rides, unique attractions and a glimpse into North Georgia’s rich history and culture, the Fair provides something for every member of the family. So make plans to stay the entire weekend and really explore the fairgrounds & spend a day on our beautiful Lake Chatuge.

Pioneer Village

Pioneer Village is a replica of just how the ole mountain towns used to be. A mercantile store with products and goods that only your grandmother might recognize. An old, one room schoolhouse, a log home with furnishings just like it was in the 1800’s, a smoke house, barn and corn crib are just like it was then. It takes you back.

How About A Day in the Park…Meeks Park in Blairsville, GA?

Summer weather isn’t over just yet! August has many more beautiful sunshiny days to take advantage of and here’s our suggestion!  How about a nice day picnicking, fishing or walking the trails at Meeks Park in Blairsville, GA?  Sounds like a great way to enjoy the mountain life of North Georgia, huh?

Just on Hwy 515 along the west edge of Blairsville is Meeks Park, one of the most beautiful parks in North Georgia. The park setting has an open meadow, lots of shade trees, and playing fields. Three other features that make the park so picturesque is a grand mountain backdrop to the south of Meeks Park, the tree lined cascading waters of Butternut Creek running through the center of the park, and Nottely River bordering the park’s western boundary.12963650_623410441147292_8307001291826892809_n

Meeks Park’s athletic facilities include seven ball fields, four batting cages, a basketball court, tennis courts, a large swimming pool, a disk golf course, skateboard park, and over a mile of nature trails, both paved and unpaved. a riverside gazebo, Nottely River overlooks, a playground (newly updated) and field houses.  Meeks Park offers many facilities for outside exercise, family outings, reunions and local events that you can rent. Contact number HERE!

Gardens and walking trailsThe park also has several pavilions, lots of picnic tables, benches and swings. The large open meadow is perfect for special events and festivals, including the popular Scottish Fest and Highland Games, and Sorghum Festival.

The walking and nature trails are a favorite park pastime for many of the folks visiting Meeks Park. The paved trail leads from the upper parking area following a tree-lined walkway near the banks of Nottely River.

All Garntos Art in Meeks ParkAlong the paved trail, hikers will encounter a sculpture by famed artist and local resident Al Garnto. At the northern edge of the park the trail passes under the Hwy 515 viaduct, then continues on to the campus of the North Georgia Technical College, located across the roadway from Meeks Park. This paved low-impact walk is both picturesque and a good cardio workout.

The parkland’s nature trails, can be accessed from several points throughout the park. Nature trails follows along both sides of Butternut Creek crossing over several bridges in route. On the opposite side of the creek the easy to follow nature trail leads through a woodland area and up a hill creating 1-mile loop. The trail offers a good workout with an atmosphere liken unto a National Forest trail. At the top of the hill visitors will encounter additional art sculptures by artist Al Garnto before descending downhill to the banks of Nottely River and back into the main park.

Dogs are not allowed in Meeks Park, instead beloved canines are offered the opportunity to enjoy their own ‘dog-park’ where they can partake in the privileged canine ritual of mingling and socialize amongst their own kind. The Dog Park is located behind North Georgia Technical College, adjacent to Union County Senior Center and across the road from Meeks Park.

It makes our hearts proud when our Georgia Mountain Community of Blairsville & it’s World’s Largest Adirondack Chair is among Seven Magic Mountains & the World’s 3rd Largest Gnomes in New York & the World’s 2nd Largest Gnomes in Iowa!  Yes, tis true, our beautiful scenic mountain towns are popping up in all the hot news outlets.  This time Fox News Travel, recently released an ever-so-interesting article detailing some really intriguing American road-side attractions.  Apparently, road-side attractions are an American phenomenon & some of these attractions date back to the 1940s.  Yes, we’ve learned so many incredible roadside attractions. Full Story HERE.

Here’s our favorite road-side attraction…. the World’s Largest Adirondack chair which I’ve sat in myself!  It’s 2-stories tall and was built by an Amish craftsman in 2013.  Who would ever think, whether you’re Amish or not, to build a ginormous Adirondack chair?  Well, we’re certainly glad this Amish craftsman took to building and completed because now it’s such a conversation piece.  If you’ve never sat in it, we encourage you to do so and bring your friends or family because it seats eight people very easily.  This chair is located just off Gainesville Hwy at Owltown Market where there is Amish furniture and gifts galore!

So gather the family and take a road-trip to the mountains of Georgia and see one of many sights that we’re famous for!  You know you want to.  And if you come and get your picture….please post to our Facebook page HERE!  We would love to see it!

It’s Courtney’s wedding day, and her mom, Delia, is making sure that everything is perfect. The groom is perfect, the dress is perfect, and the decorations (assuming they arrive) will be perfect. Then, like in any good farce the doorbell rings. And all hell breaks loose. So much for perfect.

Plays run Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons only.

Seriously?  If you’re a fan of American Idol…you will simply LOVE this event in our artistic mountain town of Blue Ridge, GA.  David Cook, 8th season American Idol winner, rocked the house with “Billy Jean” in a slow sultry, almost bluesy rock rendition!  You gotta see it HERE.

Firefly Music Blue Ridge is ecstatic present this LIVE performance in Blue Ridge on Friday, Sept 15th!

Following his success on American Idol, David broke several Billboard chart records with the release of his next album, including the notable record shattering feat of having 11 songs debut on the Hot 100 chart that week (the previous record was only 6!), with nearly 1 million digital downloads in the first week alone! David’s winning song on American Idol, “Time Of My Life”, reached Number 1 on the charts and was certified platinum several times over. His impact on American culture was so great in fact that his photo was featured on the cover of The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2009 along with President Obama and Senator John McCain.

HURRY & RESERVE YOUR SEATS NOW – HERE! Due to size constraints, this show will be limited to ONLY 75 guests, and with David’s popularity and large following it will be a quick sell-out. A very limited number of VIP Meet & Greet tickets are also available.

As many of his fans know, David Cook’s older brother Adam lost a tragic battle with brain cancer the year after David’s win on American Idol, and he has since vigilantly raised awareness of and funds for cancer research and treatment. In honor of this, proceeds from this show will be donated to the Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure cause.

Come out for a night of amazing music and support a great cause at the same time. This is how Firefly Music does it!

The park’s 22 acre lake is open to non-motorized boats, and during summer, visitors can cool off at the mountain-view beach. This park is rich in history, with many facilities being constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during our nation’s Great Depression. The “CCC Boys” story is told in the park’s museum. The CCC museum is open seasonally.

Lake Trahlyta access to water recreation includes a swimming beach and paddle-boats, none motorized boating is allowed on the lake. There’s a playground and miniature golf course near the Visitor’s Center . The park also houses a historic exhibit in honor of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); who built the parklands, trails and other sites throughout these mountains in the 1930’s, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’ program.

Summer is coming to a close but there’s still time for a great outing for you and your family.  If you love beautiful mountain views, you will love a visit to Brasstown Bald which is the highest point in Georgia – 4,784′.  This mountain adventure features incredible heights where you can see unbelievable mountain ranges. It’s a great time in the late Summer to take a nice hike up to the summit (the top) and see these scenic mountains preferably in the late afternoon so the sun isn’t so hot.  Or if you don’t hike…no problem!  From the parking lot, you can take the shuttle up to the visitors center which has an extensive museum and various forestry presentations where you can learn a lot about this area.  The best part is the observatory deck with telescopes to get a close-up view of those gorgeous mountain vistas of Rabun Bald (Georgia’s second highest mountain, slightly north of due east), Blood Mountain (south of due west), and the Cohutta Mountains, (due west of the center).

The center is also home to a small locomotive that was used to haul wood off the mountains to nearby saw mills. One of the most interesting displays takes visitors inside the mountain itself to explore the geology of Georgia’s tallest peak.   Get a sneek preview of a 360 Panoramic View- RIGHT HERE!

The Brasstown Bald Summit Trail is also another option for walking up to the Visitor Center and Viewing Platform, is a 0.6 mile paved foot trail from the parking lot.  It is very steep. Again, the shuttle service is provided as an alternative to walking the trail. Dogs must be leashed and are not permitted in the Visitor Center.

Brasstown Bald is open daily from 10:00am – 5:00pm and Visitor Center and Day Use Area is $5/person (16+) (Includes entrance fee and shuttle fee). There’s even a reduced price for Interagency/Golden Senior or Access Pass Holders: $2.00 Shuttle Fee (Free Entrance). Please call 706-896-4137 if weather is questionable!  FOR DIRECTIONS AND MORE INFO CLICK HERE.
