Wine About Winter Weekend in Ellijay, GA

$

Does a weekend full of ground hogs, coffee infused with wine, food trucks, live music, four course meals, and delicious WINE sound good to you? Are you sick of being cold and cooped up in the house? Get out and enjoy our Ellijay Wine Country vineyards between February 2-4, 2018 for our Wine About Winter weekend!

The Wine About Winter weekend will kick off on Friday, February 2, Groundhog Day. When the first settlers arrived in the area known today as Punxsutawney (Pennsylvania) they brought with them from Europe a centuries-old tradition known as Candlemas Day. On Candlemas Day, clergy would bless candles and distribute them to people. The weather on Candlemas Day was considered an important indicator of the weather to come. Long ago, Germans picked up on the Candlemas custom. If the sun shone on Candlemas Day, the Germans believed, the hedgehog would cast a shadow and another six weeks of winter was inevitable. When the Germans arrived in America, no hedgehogs were to be found. But another similar animal, the groundhog – or woodchuck- was here. The groundhog became a hedgehog stand in. Now, we celebrate Groundhog Day.

To celebrate Groundhog Day, on February 2, Chateau Meichtry and Cartecay Vineyards will be having special “groundhog” events and games! On Friday night Chateau Meichtry will have extended hours at the tasting room, a food truck, tasting specials and more! Chateau Meichtry plans to have live music, groundhog games, and will continue their tasting specials through the weekend. Cartecay Vineyards will also have live music and special events to celebrate the groundhog.

On February 3 and 4, Fainting Goat Vineyards will be debuting their wine infused coffee. They have created three varieties for you to enjoy; Merlot, Merlot and Chocolate, and Merlot Chocolate and Sriracha. You can warm up next to the fire and enjoy these delicious wine infused coffees along with their regular tastings. They will also have live music all weekend and of course the goats!

On Saturday night, February 3 at 7:30pm, Engelheim Vineyards is hosting their annual Winter Wine Fest Dinner. You must purchase tickets in advance. The tickets are going quickly and the menu is the reason why. The first course will include Crab Stuffed Mushrooms paired with Doxology, the second course will be a tomato basil soup paired with Traminette, the third course is a caprese salad paired with Hummingbird, the fourth course is a delicious horseradish encrusted beef tenderloin paired with their merlot, and the fifth course is a bourbon bread pudding paired with Sweet Molly. Tickets are $80 which includes the dinner and a complimentary wine glass.  Contact Engelheim at 706-635-9463 to get your tickets.

We hope that you will join us for this special weekend to visit our vineyards in the Ellijay Wine Country. Shake off those winter blues and enjoy food, wine, music and have less reasons to “Wine About Winter.”

Art Millican Jr., is a  former Disney artist and model maker, has created a store like no other!  Sleepy Hollow is a whimisical Fairy Garden located 90 miles north of Atlanta, just east of Blairsville in the North Georgia Mountains.  In this store and at his on site garden area, exists his hand cut and carved fairy and hobbit houses like you would see at Disney and many of America’s theme parks. His creativity is amazing even to adults and children of all ages.

Art can hand make whatever type of magical house you may be seeking. He creates items as small as a birdhouse or as large as a playhouse for your children.  He also assembles fairy doors which can be used anywhere you can imagine!  To truly understand the beauty and amazement of this craft, you must visit the Fairyland Garden he has created.  It is FREE admission and the kids are able to run and play in the houses as well as watch the wood elves work.  What a great idea to do before it gets too cold!  I have a feeling your child may come up with another item to put on the Christmas list!

While you are visiting the beautiful town of Blairsville, stop at one of their great restaurants such as The Ugly Mug Cafe or Brothers at Willow Creek.  You won’t be disappointed!

Spring is Coming…Make Time in Your Schedule to Visit Our Incredible Waterfalls

Blairsville-Union County is home to three gorgeous waterfalls: Helton Creek Falls, Trahlyta Falls and DeSoto Falls, located just outside of Union County. These waterfalls all provide easy access with viewing areas, parking and a short walk or hike to view the falls. PRINT THIS HANDY WATERFALL GUIDE HERE!

Helton Creek Falls (pictured above): The Helton Creek Falls Trail is an easy .2 mile hike. The lower falls drops over a 30′ ledge, tumbling to a pool below. The second upper falls is a tall, full falls that drop at least 60 feet. Please be advised there are many abrupt changes in grade along this short walk. Please stay on the trail and observation deck! Directions: From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south for 11.5 miles. Turn left on the first paved road past the entrance to Vogel State Park. (Look for Helton Creek Waterfall sign on right side of highway) Go approximately 1/2 mile on paved road and then continue on a gravel road approximately 1.5 miles (stay to the right at fork in the road, you will travel through the forest quite a ways) to a small pullout parking area. Trailhead will be on right as indicated.

Trahlyta Falls at Vogel State Park: Located directly below Lake Trahlyta, this waterfall located in Vogel State Park is a stepping stone waterfall that falls 40 feet. The trail is a 1 mile loop trail short and steep, but worth the effort. Directions: From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south 11 miles and turn right into Vogel State Park. The falls are located on the north side of Lake Trahlyta, named for a Cherokee maiden who is buried a few miles from the park at Stonepile Gap.

Desoto Falls: There are two waterfalls along the 1.5 mile DeSoto Falls Trail. The lower falls cascade about 20 feet. The upper, and most scenic, falls drop 80 feet. Both are accessed by a maintained trail leading from the day use parking lot. Visitors can hike to view these waterfalls. DeSoto Falls was named for the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto because a piece of armor attributed to his expedition was supposedly found in the area. Located in rugged mountains with awesome views, elevations in this 650-acre area vary between 2,000 and 3,400 feet. Directions: From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south about 15 miles from Blairsville to the DeSoto Falls Recreation Area on right.

Apple Pie…Georgia Mountain Style!

It’s no secret that we love apples here in the Georgia Mountains.  It’s also no secret that apple pie, the all-American Dessert is famous in these parts. With all the many orchards like Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge, Hillcrest Orchards or BJ Reece Orchards both in Ellijay have incredible crops of apples.

For the base recipe, we relied on our friends at Betty Crocker to help us with and then we added a little extra to make it our very own Georgia Mountain Style. Let us know what you think!

Ingredients

 Double-Crust Pastry

1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar SAVE $
1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
8 ups thinly sliced peeled tart apples (8 medium)

2 tablespoons butter or margarine SAVE $

Directions

  • Heat oven to 425ºF. Prepare Double-Crust Pastry.
  • Mix sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in large bowl. Stir in apples. Turn into pastry-lined pie plate. Dot with butter. Trim overhanging edge of pastry 1/2 inch from rim of plate.
  • Roll other round of pastry. Fold into fourths and cut slits so steam can escape. Unfold top pastry over filling; trim overhanging edge 1 inch from rim of plate. Fold and roll top edge under lower edge, pressing on rim to seal; flute as desired. Cover edge with 3-inch strip of aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning. Remove foil during last 15 minutes of baking.
  • Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until crust is brown but after 20 minutes of baking, pull the pie out & stripe the top of the crust with caramel sauce.  Cook another 20 minutes or until the juice begins to bubble through slits in crust. Serve warm if desired.  Ice-cream is also a favorite topper!
