Every Labor Day weekend our amazing Union County Historical Society hosts the Heritage Festival which celebrates Appalachian history and culture. The Mountain Heritage Festival features an open-air market with local handicrafts such as handmade brooms, candles, soaps, wood carvings, pottery, honey and garden products. Enjoy performances by bluegrass musicians, gospel groups and country musicians. Sample campfire cooking at the Civil War Camp. “Old-ways” games and craft demonstrations of rail/shingle splitting, spinning and quilting also are featured. The activities will be centered round the restored 1861 Payne family log cabin, the Mauney family barn, the Duncan family cabin, and other structures from Union County’s past. Can you mix Contemporary and Southern art genres?  Of course you can…here in the Georgia Mountains we have the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association which brings an ecelectic variety of art to these hills for everyone to enjoy.  This is a uniquely curated exhibit highlighting the artistry of Contemporary Southern and Folk Art.

FOLK ART is the art of the everyday.  Folk art encompasses a range of utilitarian and decorative media and if traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms.  May folk works, such as paintings, sculpture, basketry, and utensils, produced typically by formally “untrained” artists or by artisans of varying degrees of skill, are often marked by such attributes as highly decorative design, bright bold colors, flattened perspective, strong forms in simple arrangements, and immediacy of meaning.  Folk Art has often served as the carriers of culture, especially as representing the composite of social norms, customs, forms of behavior, etc., in a society.

Art from Southern United States, or SOUTHERN ART, includes southern expressionism, folk art, and modernism. Residents of the American South created works of art starting in 1607, however it was not until the early 1960s that southern art became recognized as a distinct genre.

Numerous movements are included in this broad category, but are all connected by the commonality of the Southern cultural experiences that formed the perceptions of the artists. Southern art exists because it was created by Southern artists and its subjects are often representational of  those residents of the American South.

Come to the Georgia Mountains and help us Celebrate the art of making Sorghum syrup two weekends in October. The  13^th and 14^th and the 20th and 21st at Meeks Park in beautiful Union County.  As usual, the mountains makes all celebrations a blast and this is no exception!

There will be games, music, biskit eatin’, log sawin’, horseshoe pitchin’, rock throwin’, greased pole climbin’, square dancin’ , face paintin’, and more!  The Appalachian mountain heritage is celebrated every year for more than 48 years at the Sorghum Festival in Blairsville, Georgia.

You don’t want to miss the entertainment! A variety of musicians and singers perform on the stage throughout the festival.

Look for arts and crafts, festival foods, games, contests, and lots to see and do. Demonstrations are a big part of the festival and include everything from chair caning to syrup making. On the first Saturday, hundreds of people will be lining the streets in downtown Blairsville to see the many floats that are made for this event!  The first Sunday will be Old Timers day.  The Sorghum Mill will be grinding cane and cooking syrup on site.  There is a ton of fun to be had during this traditional festival!  You don’t want to miss it!

This is not a “haunted house jump scare event”, but a combined effort between several community entities to create an unforgettable experience for tour goers. Union County Haunted History Tour is a combined effort between the Historical Society, Union County, local businesses, volunteers, and seasoned paranormal investigators to create an unforgettable experience for tour goers. This is not a “haunted house jump scare” event, it is a deep look into the amazing local history, legend, and actual evidence of hauntings captured in preparation for this upcoming tour.

The only way to get a reservation(s) is to purchase them in advance directly from the Union County Historical Society at (706) 745-5493 either by phone or stop by. Adults $12.00 and Children $6.00. At the time of the tour reserved guests will get a wristband verifying their reservation and participation in the tour. The tour will begin at the Old Union General Hospital (Old Nursing Home), front entrance. From there tour goers will be brought through parts of the old hospital, to the Mock House and Payne Cabin, through town and will end with a tour inside the Old Courthouse in the center of town square. The tour should last approximately two hours, rain dates and additional tour schedules will be planned according to demand, so help us make this a year round event.
