Spring is Here…Plan a Trip to the Georgia Mountains & Visit our Incredible Waterfalls

North Georgia is known for mountains, lakes, rivers and our incredible waterfalls – here’s some of our favorite in Blue Ridge & Blairsville and we have included handy waterfall guides as well.

Blue Ridge- Fannin County has five beautiful waterfalls which are accessible by hikes of various distances.

PRINT THIS HANDY FANNIN COUNTY WATERFALL GUIDE HERE!

Long Creek Falls

The most popular of the waterfalls in Fannin County is Long Creek Falls, which can be seen by hiking down a short side trail from the combined Appalachian/Benton MacKaye Trail. These falls total about 50 feet in two distinct drops. A leisurely 30 minute hike to the falls is uphill on the way in, downhill on the way out.

DirectionsGo 13.5 miles south on Aska Road to its end. Turn right onto Newport Road, go 4.5 miles to end. Turn left onto Doublehead Gap Road, cross a concrete bridge where the road will become dirt/gravel. Continue .3 miles and turn right onto dirt/gravel Forest Service Road 58 (just past the cemetery and church). Ride 5.3 miles on FS 58 to Three Forks area (Hikers Crossing Sign). Noontootla Creek is on the right as you drive. The trail begins on the north side of the road (on the left) and starts as a gradual hike alongside Long Creek. There are three short ascents before reaching the blue blazed side trail to the falls at 1.1 miles. N 34°39.815′  W084°11.053′

Fall Branch Falls

Falls Branch Falls

The upper portion of Fall Branch Falls is a series of cascades that lead to a single major drop of some 30 feet, with the water plunging into a deep pool at the base of the falls. These falls, along the Benton MacKaye Trail west of Aska Road are a shorter, although a bit harder walk than Long Creek Falls.

DirectionsTake Aska Road south 8 miles and turn right on Stanley Creek Road. Go 3.1 miles to the “parking lot” on the right just past the bridge over Falls Branch
N 34°47.017′  W084°18.166′

Sea Creek Falls

Located in the Cooper Creek Scenic Area, Sea Creek Falls are an easy walk of less than .1 miles. Unfortunately, the drive can be difficult. The first, or upper falls is a series of steep cascades ending in a brief drop. The second falls are also a series of steep cascades. When the water flow is heavy either in late Winter or Spring or after a summer rain these are a remarkable sight.

DirectionsFrom Morganton, follow GA Hwy 60 South 17.7 miles to the Cooper Creek Recreation Area turnoff on the left. Continue on FS Road 4, 2.9 miles to a fork. Turn left and follow road .3 miles. Park and walk .1 mile to the falls.

Jacks River Falls

Jacks River Falls

This popular destination in the Cohutta Wilderness Area requires the longest hike of all falls in Fannin County. Access from Fannin County is a 9.2 mile hike from Dally Gap along the Jacks River Trail. Jacks River Falls can also be accessed via an easier route from the Chatsworth side of the Cohuttas.

Directions:To reach the falls proceed north out of Chatsworth, Ga. on Hwy. US411 for 13 miles to Cisco. Turn right on Old GA 2 Rd. Continue on this road (pavement ends about 1.8 miles) 10 miles to FS 62 on the right at Big Frog Loop Road sign. Turn right on FS62 and continue 4.4 miles to Jacks River Trailhead. The Forest Service fee parking area is on the left. The trail to the falls is 3.5 miles of moderately easy walking on an old railroad bed. After reaching the river follow it downstream 0.5 miles to the falls.

Blairsville-Union County is home to three gorgeous waterfalls: Helton Creek Falls, Trahlyta Falls and DeSoto Falls, located just outside of Union County. These waterfalls all provide easy access with viewing areas, parking and a short walk or hike to view the falls. PRINT THIS HANDY UNION COUNTY WATERFALL GUIDE HERE!

Helton Creek Falls (pictured above): The Helton Creek Falls Trail is an easy .2 mile hike. The lower falls drops over a 30′ ledge, tumbling to a pool below. The second upper falls is a tall, full falls that drop at least 60 feet. Please be advised there are many abrupt changes in grade along this short walk. Please stay on the trail and observation deck! Directions: From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south for 11.5 miles. Turn left on the first paved road past the entrance to Vogel State Park. (Look for Helton Creek Waterfall sign on right side of highway) Go approximately 1/2 mile on paved road and then continue on a gravel road approximately 1.5 miles (stay to the right at fork in the road, you will travel through the forest quite a ways) to a small pullout parking area. Trailhead will be on right as indicated.

Trahlyta Falls at Vogel State Park: Located directly below Lake Trahlyta, this waterfall located in Vogel State Park is a stepping stone waterfall that falls 40 feet. The trail is a 1 mile loop trail short and steep, but worth the effort. Directions: From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south 11 miles and turn right into Vogel State Park. The falls are located on the north side of Lake Trahlyta, named for a Cherokee maiden who is buried a few miles from the park at Stonepile Gap.

Desoto Falls: There are two waterfalls along the 1.5 mile DeSoto Falls Trail. The lower falls cascade about 20 feet. The upper, and most scenic, falls drop 80 feet. Both are accessed by a maintained trail leading from the day use parking lot. Visitors can hike to view these waterfalls. DeSoto Falls was named for the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto because a piece of armor attributed to his expedition was supposedly found in the area. Located in rugged mountains with awesome views, elevations in this 650-acre area vary between 2,000 and 3,400 feet. Directions: From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south about 15 miles from Blairsville to the DeSoto Falls Recreation Area on right.

Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee is Almost Here!

It’s no secret that we think the best place to live, work & play are the Georgia Mountains.  We are quite fond of our mountains and we love to share with others what we think they will love!  One of our favorites that kicks-off the same time of year, just before school starts in late July…is none other than the Georgia Mountain Fair, held in Hiawassee at the Fairgrounds.   Our community refers to it as “the fair”.  This “fair” is so much more than just a “fair”.  With this being the 69th year they’ve been doing it, they really have gained a vast knowledge of how to make it fun, entertaining & educational all rolled up into one event. Our Georgia Mountain Fair is held July 19-27, 2019 at the Historic Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds.  Thousands of visitors from across the region travel to experience the excitement and nostalgia that they offer. With first class musical performances, arts & crafts, fun carnival rides, unique attractions and a glimpse into North Georgia’s rich history and culture, the Fair provides something for every member of the family. So make plans to stay the entire weekend and really explore the fairgrounds & spend a day on our beautiful Lake Chatuge.

Pioneer Village is a replica of just how the ole mountain towns used to be. A mercantile store with products and goods that only your grandmother might recognize.
